As it's almost Spring, it seemed like a good time to start a new series of nest paintings! I last painted nests back in 2012/13, but these new nests will be slightly different with fresher colours and will sometimes include other elements within the composition. The piece below is the first of the new series and will be heading to a gallery soon, so it's not available online at the moment. I have however released two archival quality prints of this painting - you can find those in the shop.
This piece has fluorescent red under-painting with several thin layers of light grey and white on top as I wanted these new paintings to look warm and yet fresh at the same time. And there's something deeply satisfying about painting hundreds of 'twigs' in different shades of brown and gradually seeing the nest being 'constructed' before your eyes. The next nest I'll be working on will be much larger than this one, so that will be fun!
In other news, I've had a few ideas for potential blog posts recently. I'm writing them below not only because I wanted to share them with you in advance, but also as a reminder to myself to make sure I don't forget!
1. The difficulty in balancing a social life with working when you work for yourself, and managing your work schedule successfully without becoming a hermit.
2. The comparisons to others and insecurities we all feel from time to time, and how I deal with those.
3. I'm often asked how I've been able to make art my full-time job and how I make a living from doing what I love. I'd like to share my different streams (avenues?) of income in a blog post - this could hopefully be a good source of information and advice for anyone starting out or wishing to expand their career or business. I don't have all the answers but I can share what has worked for me!
If you'd like me to cover these topics in future blog posts, click on the little heart button in the bottom right corner underneath this post. You can also share this particular post on social media by clicking on the 'share' link. Thanks so much and have a great day - I'll be back again with more new work soon!
